According to her, she dropped out of school in JSS3 after her mother's death. Life became difficult for her since she had previously lost her father.

Joy said she left the village for Lagos and worked in a hotel, but her salary was unable to sustain her and cater for her needs.

TUKO.co.ke previously reported that garbage collection is a multi-million business in Kenya and a source of livelihood for thousands.

According to World Bank, Kenya generates over 22,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, with an estimated 2,400 tonnes produced in the capital Nairobi.

The waste comprises organic (60 to 70%), plastic (20%), paper (10%), metal (2%) and medical waste (1%). In Nairobi, the Dandora dumpsite is a beehive of activities as garbage collectors mint money from selling junk to dealers for recycling.
