A gimmick to use bare-bodied men as servers in a Singapore food and beverage shop in town backfired slightly on Saturday night after the police were called in due to the presence of half-naked men wandering around.

Mr Mookata, a Thai-style barbecue restaurant along Liang Seah Street in the Bugis area, introduced four hunky men as drink servers on Jan. 8 night as part of a marketing gimmick.

But instead of drawing women and some men, police officers attended to the scene after a member of the public lodged a report regarding the servers, Shin Min Daily News reported.

The servers were supposed to serve a free flow of Asia Farm drinks to buffet diners and one free Asia Farm drink for ala-carte diners between 6:30pm and 9:30pm.

They were hired by Asia Farm in collaboration with Mr Mookata.

Two hours into the event, a police report was lodged regarding naked men in the shop.

A police car was seen outside the shop's premises, according to Shin Min.

The mookata joint was opened in May 2021 by two young owners aged 24 and 25 years old.

The owners said they were aware that the event might cause a stir and attract crowds, and had worked on implementing safe management measures.

However, they did not anticipate the police to be called in due to the presence of naked bodies in the shop.

According to the owners, business has always been good on Saturday nights.

The presence of bare bodies on the premises only caused a boom with more people outside the shop taking photos.

An Asia Farm spokesperson told Shin Min the bare-bodied activity is to emphasise health and the image of strong men is meant to give people a healthy feeling.

This is to promote the firm's healthy and low-sugar drinks.

Despite the hullabaloo, the next event is slated to take place as planned on Jan. 15.
