Kelsey Weldon WINTERSVILLE — The Jefferson County Humane Society has a new weekly program where children can read to kittens at the animal shelter located in Wintersville.

And it is partnering with the Friends of Beatty Park to sponsor Paws in the Park on June 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Beatty Park, located at 621 Lincoln Ave., Steubenville.

“We had a huge turnout for our first ‘Read to Me’ program for kids accompanied by an adult,” explained Brandi DeNoon Damewood, public relations specialist/marketing manager for the Jefferson County Humane Society.

“We had about 28 kids come to our shelter last Wednesday to read books to our shelter kitties — kiddies read to kitties,” she noted. “What a beautiful way to create enrichment for our shelter residents while engaging the youth in our community. With such a great response, we have now decided to hold this fun event each week on Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.,” she said.

Children must be accompanied by an adult and need to call to reserve a 30-minute time slot. The number to call is (740) 314-5583.

“Sometimes reading gets set aside for some snuggles with a kitten that lays directly on the book or a for a little break to play with the kitten that is climbing on the kitty tower, but all in all, it is a great experience for the kids and for the kitties at the Jefferson County Humane Society,” Damewood explained.

Planning has been under way in earnest for the Paws in the Park in conjunction with the Friends of Betty Park.

“Bring your dog. Come without a dog. Borrow a neighbor’s dog or a shelter dog, but please come and hike, socialize and snack,” reads promotional material. “Come to Beatty Park with your family and friends and walk four different trails or take a romp in the creek.” There will be free refreshments.

Pre-registration for a $5 donation is suggested by calling (740) 314-5583. The first 50 registrants will receive a free doggie bandana and homemade doggie treats.

The event is part of Friends of Beatty Park’s “Save the Historic Bridge Campaign.” Members of Friends of Beatty Park will be on hand to lead tours, answer questions and encourage leaders to save the bridge, according to a flier.

The humane society will be holding an adoption event in the park that day — dogs, puppies, kittens and some rescue animals. There will be an informational table with details about the humane society’s programs, including Read to Me, the pet pantry and how to volunteer or be involved in a fostering role.

Rules of the day include: Well socialized dogs are welcome; dogs must be kept on a leash at all times; “clean up after your pet;” children under 14 can bring a dog for free; and children must be supervised.

Those not pre-registered can attend but only the first 50 pre-registered will be given a bandana.
