Dumas Downtown Association (DDA) Executive Director Irene Delgado told the members of the Dumas Economic Development Corporation (DEDC) Board of Directors Monday during their regular meeting that the child-centered Kids in Downtown event that took place Saturday had been a success, adding that the DDA was considering having another in October with a Halloween theme.

“It was one of the only events that I haven’t heard anything negative about,” she told the board members.  “Businesses, people there, everyone loved it.  Almost every business was involved with it.”

One of the big features of the event was that parents could purchase a $25 wrist-band for their child that entitled him or her to a movie at the Evelyn Theater, lunch at J&J’s Grill, unlimited play at Just Dig on Dumas Avenue, and other goodies from participating downtown businesses.  Money from the wrist bands helped pay the costs the businesses incurred.  The feature was a big hit with the business owners.  “Every business owner asked if we could keep doing these, because while the kid did the activity, the parent shopped, so it went really well,” said Delgado.

Delgado said the DDA had the capacity to sell 100 wrist bands for the event.  By Friday, they had all sold out and another 100 people were asking for them, but the DDA could not expand the activities and goodies to accommodate more.   Next time, she said, they would prepare for 2-3 hundred.

Children and parents who were asked Saturday unanimously said they were having a good time as they shopped, took tours from first responders of emergency vehicles, and did other things.  While the weather was blazing hot, it didn’t seem to dampen the spirit.

Among the participants Saturday, two cheerleaders from Dumas High School, Jaylen Lopez and Haven Mares — with help from little sister Kayla Mares — were selling homemade treats to raise money for a trip to Florida they were going to take during the Thanksgiving break.  The two had recently returned from cheer-leading camp where they had won All American.  The trip is part of that.

Business owners seemed to be enjoying themselves too — and not just the added business.  James McAlaster, co-owner of Flowers Etc. said he had struggled to find helium for the balloons he was giving away, but the effort had been worth it.  “It has been fun.  Lots of cute little kids.”
