Week-long northbound I-25 Express Lane closure on I-25 South Gap — Colorado Department of Transportation

Douglas County — Motorists can expect a week-long closure of the northbound Interstate 25 Express Lane from County Line Road near Monument to Sky View Lane/Tomah Road near Larkspur beginning June 19, as crews install concrete aprons to help water safely drain off the highway median. This work comes as completion of permanent paving in this area of northbound I-25 nears as part of the I-25 South Gap project.

The Express Lane will be CLOSED and motorists may not enter the lane via the skip or double white lines as crews will be actively working in the median and Express Lane. There is no detour for this work. Motorists should stay the course of I-25 and follow posted speeds and signage. Please plan for increased time to get to your destination – two lanes of northbound I-25 will be open during peak travel times.

Once apron installation at the northbound I-25 Express Lane is complete, crews will shift their focus to permanent paving operations on southbound I-25 in the same area between Sky View Lane/Tomah Road and County Line Road. Once paving operations near completion on southbound I-25, crews will plan an extended closure of the southbound I-25 Express Lane for up to two weeks following the Fourth of July weekend for crews to install aprons.

The I-25 South Gap Express Lanes opened to traffic on Dec. 10, 2021, and tolls are temporarily waived for testing. Significant construction of the I-25 South Gap project was completed a year ahead of schedule. There is more work to be done, such as a final layer of paving and tolling infrastructure installation.

The $419 million project also delivered shoulder widening, new bridges, new wildlife crossings/fencing, improved operations with a southbound I-25 truck climbing lane near Monument, a southbound I-25 truck chain up station, and modernized technology. While significant construction was completed in mid-December 2021, the entire project will be completed by November 2022. Tolling is expected to begin in early 2023.

When toll collection begins, motorists will have the choice of using the Express Lane for a faster, more reliable travel time in exchange for a toll. Express Lanes will be free to vehicles with three or more people and motorcycles. All travelers will have the choice of taking the general-purpose lanes for free.

Motorists are urged to use the lanes safely, heed the speed limit, and enter and exit the Express Lane through the dashed white line only. In addition, it is illegal to use an Express Lane as a passing lane and motorists can be fined if it is used for that purpose.
