MACKINAW CITY — A program of international and domestic music is planned for Tuesday, Aug. 9 when the Straits Area Concert Band performs in concert at the Roth Performance Shell in Mackinaw City’s Conkling Heritage Park.

Traditionally opening with "O Canada" and "The Star Spangled Banner," the band plans to perform the classics "Trombone King," "Tango For Band," and "Denbridge Way." Next on the playlist is "God Bless the USA" to be followed by "Uncle Henry" and "King Cotton."

The band is performing in its 39th season and attracts musicians from all over northern Michigan. Some drive 100 miles one-way to rehearse and participate in the concerts. This season’s players number 68 performers on brass, woodwinds, drums and percussion.

The Straits Area Concert Band is under the direction of Doug White. Tuesday’s concert will also feature selections directed by Don Conaway and Patricia Conaway.

Music in Mackinaw is hosted by a volunteer committee that operates under the auspices of the Mackinaw City Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Mackinaw City. Local businesses and private community benefactors fund the performances by contributing to The Straits Area Community Foundation.
